Meanwhile in these individual United States …

Cut spending, raise taxes and fees, and accept billions of dollars from Congress. That's been the formula for states trying to survive the worst economy since the 1930s.

Congress unlikely to extend hand to ailing states – Seattle Times

As the economic problems draw out, those who sold voters on talk about fiscal responsibility in terms of requiring government to pay as it goes are asking the same of the states.

Just as government expects its citizens to pay as they go  – and will actually function as an instrument of enforcement when citizens fail to pay, economic transparency forced by accountability and justification for decisions become key in every state.

More importantly the federal taxers and spenders must absolutely carry out their tasks in a public fishbowl.

Among other things that would require honest and comprehensive justification for spending decisions. Case in point is the defense budget which – in and of itself – leans more negatively on every other budget category than any other spending.

Again, should we not examine our insecurities and ask if we should spend more on guns than butter? Or having been mugged in the park, is our solution a panicked pattern of buying a new gun every payday?

Government bankruptcy laws have no mercy for citizens who irresponsibly spend their income in the same way government overspends on defense.

It’s our national immaturity … living our lives around not the flavor, but the fear of the month.
